Whether you're planning transportation for a wedding, prom or for a business associate or important client, being well informed is the key to having a safe and satisfying ride. To reduce the risk of a no-show, getting poor service, or not getting what you expected, We recommend the following tips before hiring a limousine service provider:
- Check references. Choose an experienced, reputable company with numerous references. A company should be able to demonstrate that they have successfully operated for many years and have a solid reputation for quality and safety, proper and valid licensing, and up-to-date insurance. Visit BBB.org to view a business profile and to search for an Accredited Business. You can read and consider what BBB has to report about the company which could include the complaint history and consumer reviews.
- Ask for proof of insurance. Operators should be eager to provide proof of valid, appropriate current insurance coverage for their fleet. Beware that some limousine service providers may insure their vehicles under a personal auto policy, if at all. Personal auto insurance policies rarely cover the clients who hire the vehicle.
- Verify that the driver has the appropriate license required with the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles to drive the type of vehicle you seek to rent, and request proof of such licensure.
- Verify that the company has the proper licensure and insurance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
- Verify that the vehicle has passed required inspection and that the inspection is current and valid. Request and obtain proof from the company.
- For service taking you or your party across state lines, check with that state for regulations and compliance requirements. In some states, the vehicle can be stopped and immediately impounded if it is found to be out of compliance.
- Seek quality chauffeurs. A professional chauffeur is equally as important to the success of your event as is a safe vehicle. Choose a provider that places a high value on the caliber of their chauffeurs and can provide proof of their qualifications.
- Get everything in writing. Special occasions, such as birthdays, weddings and proms, commonly require personalized attention to your specific requirements. The more specific your requirements, the further in advance you should reserve your limousine. When doing so, insist on a written contract that clearly states all details of your reservation, and be sure you understand all terms and conditions of your agreement.
- Use your seatbelt, even if the law doesn’t require that you wear it.
- Know your rights. Inquire about the company's cancellation policy and get a copy in writing.
- Look before you book. If you haven't used the provider before and time allows, visit the company in person before hiring them. The time to find out what you're getting is not on the date of the special occasion.
